Don Nerone has been involved in racing for most of his life. He has owned and operated three racetracks in his career; Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, FL, USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL and Orlando Speedworld in Bithlo, FL. He left Orlando for a time and sold the track to the current owner Robert Hart. After a few years of struggling to get a crowd, Hart asked Don to come back and start a Late Model Racing Tour at Harts two tracks, New Smyrna Speedway and Orlando Speedworld. Don is General promoter for the two tracks and now runs three different tours, the Sunbelt Super Late Model, the Goodyear Challenge Late Models, and The Penske Racing Shocks United Pro Modifieds. |
Even with the success of the stock car series’, the track attendance wasn’t getting to levels Don and Robert were happy with. Don decided to rehash an old idea called Crash-a-Rama. Crash-a-Rama is an event of silly, crazy, and unique races the track throws into one wild night. The big draw of the Crash-a-Rama is the Figure-8-School Bus Race. This race garners press from all over the country. The success of the Crash-a-Rama has helped to bring Orlando Speedworld back into the mind of the public and has raised attendance during the regular racing season. Don’s passion for racing has helped New Smyrna Speedway and Orlando Speedworld continue to bring the sport to the public. The continued success of the Super Late Model, Late Model, and Pro Modified series’ can be directly linked to the hard work and dedication of Don Nerone. |
